In November 2006, people took to the streets of
Melbourne to confront the G20, a meeting of the
world’s most powerful finance ministers whose policies
perpetrate suffering and violence in countless
communities around the world every day. Since that
protest, Victorian and Federal police have carried out
a vast operation of surveillance and arrests, raiding
houses at dawn and slapping protestors with ludicrous
charges and repressive bail conditions. This is a
campaign of intimidation and part of an attempt to
criminalise protest; it is an attack on everyone’s
ability to resist war, poverty and oppression. To defend political protest, people are organising in
solidarity with those arrested and supporting them by
raising money to help with legal costs and other
expenses. For more information see www.afterg20.org
The assassination collective is number one on my punk band list. They are really freakin excellent.

it’s true! the assassination collective are so excellent. i’m so glad they’re coming to town. the other good thing about this show (besides 1. the assassination collective, & 2. hopefully getting lots of money to help our friends in court [revealing my conflict-of-interest here, shhh]) is that all the bands are really different & good. the thaw are really beautiful instrumental, & i don’t know call the medic, call the nurse!!, but emmy describes them as ‘no wave’. and i have little idea what the hard ons sound like, but i’m sure they’ll be fun. & varied line ups make me happy.

dear lou, i love it when you are happy. oh yes, i really should have been more explicitly enthusiastic about the thaw too, and here i will reminisce about a lovely sunday afternoon with orange light streaming through into our little backyard, while a gathering of shy and diffident people who like music clustered on the ground to listen to each other play this and that, soft songs and occasional casiotone accompaniment. (i shan’t mention the crotchetty neighbour). one of the girls from the thaw sang and played guitar, together with a boy who rolled a battery up and down a skateboard. i think they were my favourite bit that afternoon. as well as the little pillows of polenta and basil.
the thaw are very likely to be much louder at this fundraiser gig. i conclude that they are very good both loud and soft. like a piano.
